Write about a time when you realized you needed to look out for yourself in a silly or harmless situation—maybe dodging a pop quiz, escaping a group chat argument, or remembering at the last second to submit an assignment. How did choosing wisely make your life easier?

Prompt Response: A time I realized I had to look out for myself in a silly or harmless situation was last semester when I was under a lot of stress and I almost forgot to turn something in that I had already done days ago and I turned it in at the last minute at night and I was really grateful because I know that if I had gotten a late grade I would have been mad because I actually did the work. Summary: Today we finished up reading our story and finished the writable questions. Reflection: I learned about the symbolism in the story "the life you save may be your own".

Describe a time that you had an encounter with a homeless person, either directly or indirectly. What did you think and how did it make you feel?

Prompt Response: A time I had an interaction with a homeless person was when I gave a homeless man an orange in New York. I felt very bad for the man and I hope that he got back on his feet but unfortunately many homeless people are not able to get out of it. Summary: Today we read a story and answered questions. Reflection: I learned how to answer the questions on the story well.

Write about what you are thankful for.

Prompt Response: Something I am thankful for is the fact that I have a comfortable life with a good home life and a house. Often times people take for granted just being able to be comfortably alive seeing as many people live in terrible poverty and do not know if they will be able to even have a full meal that day. Summary: Today we worked on our vocabulary assignments and used vocab words in sentences. Reflection: I learned how to use vocab words in original sentences.

The last scene forces readers to reinterpret Emily’s entire life. Write about a moment when new information changed your perception of a person or situation. How did that “plot twist” reshape your understanding, the same way Faulkner’s ending reshapes the story?

Prompt Response: Something that changed the way I thought about a person was when I discovered that my aunt's ex-husband had actually disliked our entire family when they were married. When I was young, I had always liked my former uncle but he had never really spent much time around the family. When I grew older I discovered that my former uncle had always disliked the family and it really surprised me and made me think less of him. Summary: Today we took a pop quiz on A Rose for Emily and then watched a short film adaptation. Reflection: I learned about the symbolism in A Rose for Emily.

In “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily’s actions shock the reader—she kills her fiancé and keeps his body in her home for years. People often react with disbelief when they hear about real-life stories that seem just as unbelievable. Write about the most shocking or “craziest” news story you have ever heard. What happened, and why did it stand out to you? How did people react to it, and what does it reveal about human behavior?

Prompt Response: One of the craziest news stories I have heard was about a man getting high on bath salts and trying to eat a homeless man alive. This news story showed how significant an affect drugs can have on the human mind, making them do unimaginably violent and depraved things. Summary: Today we finished the story A Rose for Emily and answered characterization questions on a specific character in the story. Reflection: I learned about the characterization of Miss Emily.

Miss Emily’s house once represented pride and tradition, but over time it became a symbol of decay and isolation. Describe a place that holds deep memories for you—positive or negative—and explain how it reflects part of who you are or how you’ve changed over time.

Prompt Response: A place that holds deep memories for me is my first house I ever lived in. The house was smaller and I only lived in it when I was much younger but I've been around it a few times and it feels very nostalgic. Summary: Today we read the story A Rose for Emily, while we read we answered questions on writable. Reflection: I learned about some of the symbolism that Miss Emily holds in the story A Rose for Emily.

Think about the vocabulary words from Lesson Two. Write about a time you saw or heard one of these words outside of the classroom — maybe in a movie, song, social media post, or book. Describe how it was used and whether the context helped you understand the word better.

Prompt Response: I have heard the word contemptuous in a movie I believe. I think someone was talking about how another guy was not obeying orders and he called him contemptuous.  Summary: Today we worked on some vocabulary assignments and our PowerPoint presentation. Reflection: Today I learned how to use different vocabulary words.

Thinking about “The Rockpile,” which parent or guardian in your life has been the strictest when it comes to discipline? Explain how their approach to discipline has influenced you or shaped your behavior.

Prompt Response: I only have one parent so I would say my mom has been most strict in my life although I would not consider her very strict. My mother was very light in terms of being strict and did not take a very punishment oriented approach, usually if me or my brother did something wrong she would talk to us and tell us why what we did was wrong which, in my opinion did a better job of disciplining me and my brother than punishment would have.  Summary: Today we went further into the rock pile story. Reflection: I learned about how strict other peoples parents are and what their approaches to discipline are.

Thinking about "The Rockpile," what is something your parents forbade you from doing when you were growing up? Explain what it was and why they might have set that rule.

Prompt Response: Something my parents forbade me from doing when I was young was having a phone. I got a phone in 8th grade which for most people would be considered pretty late. My mom didn't want me to get a phone because she didn't want me to get addicted to it and waste my time and I respect that decision. Summary: Today we read and did worksheets on the short story "the rock pile". Reflection: I learned about places that peoples parents forbid them from going.

Words shape how we think, write, and interpret literature. Think about a time when learning a new word or understanding a specific term helped you better analyze a text, express an idea, or make your writing stronger.

Prompt Response: A time learning a new word helped me better express an idea was when I learned the meaning of the word vernacular. I used to be unable to express what the way someone uses words was but then I learned that word and it really helped me out. Summary: Today we took notes on vocab and worked on assignments based on the vocab. Reflection:  I learned the vocab for our unit.
