Poetry Poster - Harlem: A Dream Deferred

Image
Today I recited the poem Harlem: A Dream Deferred, and here is my poster.

As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

Prompt Response: I have learned a lot in this class over the semester, what I enjoyed most was the group assignments. I found the group assignments very fun to do and I thought that I learned a lot from them. The project I found most engaging was the project where we made our own poem, I had never made my own poem before and it was a very unique experience. I thought that I connected most with the poetry aspect of the class, seeing as much of the semester was focused on it and I found it the most engaging and easy to understand. Finally, I think what I need to work on more is reading comprehension. Summary: Today we worked on our blog post. Reflection: I learned about how my semester went in this class.

Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt Response: One tradition my family does is lighting our own fireworks on new years. This tradition is important because my family really does not like going to firework shows because of how many people are usually at them. Lighting our own fireworks at home lets us avoid the crowd but still get a good firework show. Summary: Today we worked on our blog post. Reflection: I learned about my family traditions today.

How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt Response: I feel like holidays have changed in that the magical feeling that holidays used to evoke when I was younger has definitely diminished. Now, holidays still feel important but they don't feel as special, when I was a kid, I used to not be able to sleep because of how excited I was for Christmas, now it just feels like a time to spend with family and I don't get as excited.   Summary: Today we did the vocab lessons in our book. Reflection: I learned how to use the vocab in our book.

Write about something that you can't stop thinking about.

Prompt Response: Something I cant stop thinking about is my future. Oftentimes I find myself wondering who I will turn out to be, I am still pretty young and could change a lot before I become a real adult. I also think a lot about how I will become successful and what I will do to achieve success in life. Summary: Today we chose electives for senior year. Reflection: I learned what electives I will be taking senior year.

Cultural Mask - 12/9

Image
This masks reflects both my cultural identity and my life and what I care about most.

Write about the best gift you have received.

Prompt Response: I think that the best gift I have ever received was the Lego Death Star I got for Christmas when I was a kid. When I was young I really liked Lego's and I had always wanted the Death Star because it was really cool but I never thought I would get it because it was expensive but on one Christmas I got it and it made me very happy. Summary: Today we were assigned our poetry final. Then we worked on vocab Reflection: I learned the vocab for lesson 5.

After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt Response: The masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in because different groups have different masks, the girl in the film has a mask unlike anyone else's and this inability to fit into a group causes her to be alone. A scene that stood out to me was when the girl in the film falls and breaks her mask, this scene shows how the masks can be broken to reveal who you really are. The masks in the film connect to our project because they display who you are. Summary: Today we did our blog post and worked on our masks. Reflection: I learned about the pressure to fit in today in the short film.

In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

Prompt Response: The aspect of my cultural identity I am most proud of is my nationality. I think that America is one of the greatest countries to ever exist and I think that although we have many flaws I am very proud to be an American. Summary: Today we read a poem called "I too", we then made a mask that was meant to represent our cultural identity. Reflection: I learned about different peoples culture.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

Prompt Response: One time that I made a choice that seemed exciting and rebellious was in middle school when I decided that I really did not want to go to school so I skipped for the whole day. The next day when I got to school I learned from my friends that a big project had been assigned that day and that was the only day we had to work on it in class. I decided to stop skipping after that day. Summary: Today we read a poem about children being rebellious, we analyzed the poem and then wrote about some of the lines in the poem. Reflection: I learned that being "cool" isn't always the best way to go about life.

Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt Response: Something meaningful I did over break was build a chicken coop with my family. The process was very difficult and there were many mistakes made but we were able to complete the coop and it felt very good to have finished it. Summary: Today we did the vocabulary lesson and assignments in our vocab books. Reflection: Today, I learned how to use the vocabulary from lesson 4.
